The Big Question. Different religions pose many different answers to it.

I’m afraid I don’t have an easy and comforting answer for this question. Science tells us that the body shuts down and what we call being “alive” stops. Ultimately what lies beyond, if anything, is unknown to all of us. You can perhaps take comfort in this however, once you die your body will become part of a larger ecosystem and help other creatures that are part of the web of life to live. Life is about change, without the waves crashing onto the beach our ocean would lie still.

Perhaps there is an afterlife, perhaps we become part of a larger consciousness that encompasses the planet, or maybe it’s like sleep and we dream forever. All I can know is that I don’t know.

That’s a good question! I know that your body stops working – your blood stops pumping, your brain stops sending signals etc. – and then the body starts to decay.
There have been some cases where it was shown that brain activity carried on for a little longer than expected (like 7 minutes or so), but what exactly happens or how you perceive it, no one really knows.
For example, some people choose to believe that everyone has a soul that carries on existing or living some kind of afterlife, but this is one thing that science has struggled to test! So we can’t yet prove that you have a soul and we can’t yet prove that you don’t have one. This is where religion comes in and tries to explain it to bring us comfort and put things into a way we can understand it.

If we take the science point of view first, the body stops working, your heart stops beating, the blood stops flowing, your neurons in your brain stop firing. If your buried you body will start to decompose and probably feed a few little critters.

But if we are talking about the concept of the soul or spirit, then I suppose it depends on your own personal belief system as to what life after death is. I won’t say any of them are wrong or right as for me there is no evidence of them, and I am open minded about it.

It is one of the big questions of our time. Science has not found an answer yet, however, as far as I know, it indicates that your conscious mind shuts down and that is the end. I like to think like Nick, that we form part of a cycle in which we will form part of the ecosystem and live as part of something or someone else 🙂
