Rainbows are made when light passes through water vapour in the atmosphere. The light is the refracted through the droplets of water and split into different colours.

Look up images of light passing through a triangle of glass (a prism) and you’ll see the exact same thing happening! 😀

As Nick said, the light is split into different colours when it goes through the water droplets. This can also happen when it goes through glass (as in prisms) or other see-through things that are denser than air!
Sunlight has many different wavelengths – each one corresponding to a different colour – and when it goes through the water droplets, they split and we see them next to each other.
You can imagine this like an old-school handheld fan. When it’s closed it’s like the sunlight or white light and when it goes through the water droplets, it spreads out, so it’s like you now have an open fan!
